Release of Bio-Formats 8.5.0

Today we are releasing Bio-Formats 8.5.0 which includes several fixes and improvements.

The full list of changes included in this release are as follows:

File format fixes:

• Amira
  • improve physical size unit detection
• DICOM
  • check Study Time tag when determining which files belong in the same dataset
  • enforce correct value size when writing DS VR
• Evident/Olympus VSI
  • recognize calibration function tag and store as Calibration Function Value in original metadata
• Hamamatsu NDPIS
  • preserve macro/mask image names, consistent with underlying NDPI data
• Imaris HDF
  • work around issue in netcdf-java which prevented files with # in path from being opened
• TIFF
  • improve file size estimate when determining whether to write BigTIFF
• Zeiss CZI
  • ignore plate metadata if a plate configuration is present but not activated
  • fix calculation of phase, illumination, and rotation counts

Bio-Formats improvements:

• Fix many Javadoc warnings
• Unify XML parsing to use changes in ome-common 6.2.1
  • fix CVE-2026-22186, see corresponding security advisory

Component updates:

• ome-codecs was upgraded to 1.1.3
• ome-common was upgraded to 6.2.1
• ome-model was upgraded to 6.5.3
• formats-gpl now inherits aircompressor dependency from ome-codecs
• Remove outdated dependency exclusions from formats-gpl
